Welcome!
Established 1868, Middlebury is a small farming and
manufacturing town situated in Northern Indiana’s Amish Country. The first
Amish families began arriving from Ohio and settling in this area in 1841, nine
years after the first settlers came from Middlebury, Vermont.
Early law enforcement in Middlebury has been difficult to trace. The first appointed
law enforcement officers (night watchmen) were part time officials, often holding other
positions with the street department or as cemetery keeper. The first full time officer
was not hired until 1973. Historically, Middlebury has often relied on its citizen
volunteers to help keep the peace. The first recorded confirmation of this fact was the
documentation of a meeting held on August 27, 1853 establishing the “Middlebury Felon
Exterminators” society. The Society’s constitution, written in calligraphy, is housed
at the Goshen Court House and was on display at the Middlebury Museum in July 2009. A
typed copy of the document and original society officers and members can be viewed
